What should every woman know about the hygiene of intimate area?
In a healthy woman’s vagina there are numerous bacteria from the genus Lactobacillus (lactic acid bacteria include Lactobacillusnacidophilus, L. Fermentum, L. Plantarum, L. Brevis, L. casei).They are non-pathogenic bacteria responsible for the production of lactic acid which by significant reducing of the vaginal environment pH proves to effectively inhibit the proliferation of other
- pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria and fungi).
The natural pH of a healthy woman’s vagina (ranging from 3,8 -4,5) may be increased as a consequence of many factors which may then result in the growth of the microorganisms and occurrence of inflammations.
The most crucial factors that increase the susceptibility to infections in feminine intimate and genital area include:
- systemic diseases (diabetes, uremia, Vitamins A and B deficiency, iron deficiency, estrogen deficiency, excessive obesity),
- antibiotic and steroid treatments,
- use of oral contraceptives,
- use of improper cleansing products which have high - alkaline pH (e.g. soap),
